Remnants of ramparts that surrounded Bologna, located near the train station.
Castle For Galliera; These ruins are what remains of the ancient city fortification, built and destroyed five times. The first fortress was raised by Cardinal Legate Bertrando del Poggetto in 1330-32 and destroyed with his expulsion in 1334; in the fourteenth-century chapel there were frescoes by Giotto and a marble polyptych by Giovanni di Balduccio (1334 c.). The last building, with a moat and eight watchtowers, was erected by the will of Julius II in 1507 and destroyed in 1511.
My how Bologna has changed over the centuries!
